Homebrewing 101

Own a 5-gallon bucket and a bathtub? You can make beer. Enjoy cooking? You can make beer. Enjoy beer? You can make beer.

With the City of Austin recently recognized as the top beer destination in the world, there’s no need to travel far to taste great beer. Still, wouldn’t it be fun to learn how to brew it in your own home? Brewing great beer is both an art and a science. Explore the basics of homebrewing, including equipment, ingredients, recipe design and process. Discuss the art of brewing to style, brewing creatively and brewing consistently. The first class will start with a short demonstration showing just how easy it is to brew. Then, we'll immediately get started brewing your first batch! During the second (last) class, we will package the beer made during the first class.

Throughout the class, we will discuss the primary ingredients in beer - malt, hops, water and yeast - and provide tips and tricks to turn those simple ingredients into the beverage we know and love. We’ll get hands-on with equipment, sample ingredients like hops and barley, and taste some homebrew and local craft beers along the way.

Must be 21 or older to participate in samplings.
